The Sunset® Breezehouse™ home was thoughtfully designed by Michelle Kaufmann Designs and Sunset Magazine for green, healthy living. The key feature of the Sunset Breezehouse is the BreezeSpace at the center, which is situated under a distinctive butterfly-shaped roof. This room, a glass-enclosed breezeway or porch, allows you to “let the green in” to your main living and dining areas, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. Courtyards, terraces and decks are placed at the front and rear of the home to further integrate nature with living. By borrowing space from the outside, the home feels much larger than it is.

Green Living

The Sunset® Breezehouse™ meets the Energy Star® program standards for energy efficient homes and meets the performance standards of the American Lung Association Health House program.

This healthy, high performance home is insulated with an air-barrier, open cell foam insulation, and all wood-to-wood framing joints are caulked, which makes the home airtight, energy efficient, and less likely to produce mold.

The Sunset Breezehouse also uses water-saving plumbing fixtures, on-demand water heaters, and a mechanical ventilation system that is 30% more efficient than typical forced-air systems.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficient, dual-pane glass windows and doors are placed throughout the home, to maximize cross-ventilation and natural lighting in all major rooms, and minimize the need for artificial lighting and climate control. Clerestory windows and glass doors in the BreezeSpace allow for ample natural lighting and ventilation. The kitchen features windows at counter height to wash the surfaces with light. At the corner of each bedroom are French doors to evoke a feeling of infinite space and allow natural light and air to flow into the space. Each bathroom will have a skylight and window for ample lighting and ventilation.

In addition to all of these efficiencies, the Sunset Breezehouse features healthy finishes such as non-toxic paints and formaldehyde-free cabinetry. We have also pre-selected a wide range of eco-friendly finishes so that you may further customize your sustainable Sunset Breezehouse home. All of these materials and systems not only create a healthy environment, but also significantly reduce costs for heating, cooling and water bills.

Solar Ready

Each Sunset Breezehouse home is solar ready. If you would like to incorporate a photovoltaic system in your Sunset Breezehouse design, we will work with you to have a system installed upon delivery. The butterfly-roof configuration provides a sloped surface for the solar panels while screening visibility and glare of the panels from neighbors.

If you are unable to invest in a photovoltaic system right away, we just made future installation easier! Other renewable energy systems such as geothermal, wind generator or hybrid systems can also be included in your home design. Glazing is based on solar orientation.

This beautiful, eco-friendly home will be constructed off-site at our wholly owned mkConstructs factory and delivered near completion, offering time, material, and cost efficiencies.
